The Challenge

The Black Heron House is a five-star boutique hotel just outside Aldeburgh on the Suffolk coast, overlooking protected marshland and ancient woodland. Combining contemporary luxury with understated English heritage, it has quickly become a destination for discerning travellers seeking exceptional hospitality, fine dining and restorative escapes.

The hotel was founded by Eleanor Ashcroft, an interior designer and hospitality entrepreneur with over twenty years’ experience creating luxury boutique hotels across Europe. Originally from Suffolk, Eleanor returned to the county after inheriting the neglected Ashcroft Manor from her grandparents. Rather than selling the estate, she spent four years restoring it, driven by a vision of a hotel that celebrated the quiet beauty of the Suffolk coastline. Its name was inspired by the rare black herons Eleanor would spot in the nearby wetlands as a child — to her, the bird embodied elegance, patience and quiet confidence, qualities she wanted woven through the guest experience.

The existing branding felt generic and inconsistent across digital and printed touchpoints. The client sought a premium identity — timeless rather than trend-led.

The Solution

A distinctive visual identity was developed rooted in the black herons Eleanor encountered as a child. Black herons use a unique hunting method known as canopy feeding, spreading their wings like an umbrella to create shade that draws fish to the surface. This motion was translated into a semi-abstract motif at the core of a responsive logo suite, with the heron rendered consistently in black, even against dark backgrounds.

The resulting identity draws on the sense of calm that comes from proximity to the coast, extending into a series of clean, understated adverts and a bespoke range of hotel merchandise.
